Mystical Still Lifes (2020)
A selection of still lifes, made from process-leftovers, gathered objects and carefully placed light sources. It is an ongoing element in my practice allowing me to recycle things at all times and show the sublime and/or mystical qualities of objects and compositions.
During the Covid period, Maesen found himself confined to his parents’ horticulture farm. In the now-vanished old garage, a dusty relic from another era, he began arranging still lifes using collected objects and symbolic remnants from earlier artistic processes. What started as a spontaneous gesture soon evolved into a quiet, daily ritual. Over time, this meditative process gave rise to a new body of work — the Mystical Still Lifes.
Mystical Still Life 001: The Entrance evokes a mysterious terrain, leading toward what appears to be a cave-like opening. A gauzy veil of grey mist descends from above, enveloping the scene in an otherworldly stillness. The textures suggest elements of skin, ash, and earth — a convergence of organic remnants and sculptural gestures, holding space for the invisible to take form.
